The Book of Wisdom was written around 50 B.C., making it one of the latest of all the Old Testament books. The Jewish people were living in Egypt during the time this book was written, and many had long forgotten the challenging times their ancestors had faced. The leaders at the time were afraid that the Jewish people would forget their faith and history. It is believed that one of those leaders authored the Book of Wisdom. The author wanted them to remember their roots, traditions, and faith. It was written to get them through whatever challenges they would face by reminding them to seek wisdom and learn from their ancestors.
Today’s reading is often used for funerals. Some find it sad, but I think of it as a joy filled reading. It reminds me of what is to come and where those who have gone before us are, in the hands of God. They are in peace. In the book The Shack there is a part where the main character gets a glimpse into heaven and a chance to see his father. He sees all these beautiful colorful lights moving around and then one breaks away and comes towards him. While he can’t speak to his father, he can sense that it is his light that has come to him. Wisdom is reminding us that the many generations that have gone before us are abiding with God.
The Greek word for Wisdom is Sophia and the Bible speaks of wisdom as and aspect or image of God. Wisdom is often referred to as she. One of the most beautiful passages in the Book of Wisdom is in Chapter 7 verses 27-28. And she, who is one, can do all things, and renews everything while herself perduring; And passing into holy souls from age to age, she produces friends of God and prophets. For there is nought God loves, be in not one who dwells with Wisdom. Wisdom is certainly needed these days. She is found in the quiet where God is loudest. She has been with countless souls before us. Solomon sought God’s wisdom as did prophets and saints and if we seek her as they did, we can make a difference in this world and God willing, one day we too shall be in the hands of God at peace darting about as sparks in the divine light. But for now, while here on earth, let your light shine and your joy bring others closer to God.
