The disciples face a dilemma today that follows a familiar challenge. Remember when Jesus told the disciples of his fate, and how he would suffer at the hands of the authorities, be crucified, and then rise after three days. Hearing this, Peter refused to accept the grim news. Then Jesus rebuked him, charging that he sees as human beings do, and not as God does. Jesus strives to have his disciples behold the world as God does. And this will require a deeper faith. It will require us to see as God sees.
Likewise, for today, the healing of a boy who is possessed by a demon, will require deep faith. The boy’s father pleads with Jesus, “If you can do anything, have compassion and help us.” To say to the Son of God, “If you can do anything …” suggests a limitation of the divine power. Jesus then reminds him, “Everything is possible to one who has faith.”
When we come to the Lord with our request for help, we bring our faith – all that we have – trusting that with God everything is possible. You may hear this prayer anytime when parents wait patiently for the recovery of their child who is very sick. Sometimes, not having the words to voice their petition, they will simply say, “Please Lord.” And they trust in God’s mercy and care.
