Last week I challenged myself to enter the Triduum in silence. I left work on Thursday, turned my cell phone off and left it off until late Sunday.
The world around me came to a grinding stop. There was no radio, no TV or phone and it was beautiful. I used imaginative Ignatian prayer, and I became a guest at the Last Supper, prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, walked the road to Calvary and sat at the foot of The Cross. It was immensely powerful, and I felt Jesus right there beside me.
I can only imagine the mixed emotions Mary felt when she recognized Jesus call her by name. She must have been overjoyed in hearing him say her name, confused when he said, “Stop holding on to me.” She recognizes Jesus with the eyes of faith and heard him with the ear of her heart. Her faith prompted her to go and tell the others.
When was the last time you heard Jesus speaking to you? Would you recognize his voice? The more you and I sit with Jesus in silence the louder and more recognizable he will become. Jesus speaks to us in so many ways. We hear him in formal prayer, private prayer and through those around us.
I have decided to continue tuning the world out one day a week. I will expand my three days into “Silent Saturdays.” Hopefully in the silence I will hear where God is prompting me to be his hands and feet.
