We see Jesus casting out a demon from someone who was mute. This caused amazement among the people, but there were some who weren’t convinced and accused him of using Satan’s power to do so. Jesus responds with a powerful message about the nature of good and evil.
Jesus begins by saying, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls.” He uses this example to show that the Enemy can’t cast out demons by itself. If the Enemy were to do so, the Enemy would be working against itself and ultimately would destroy its own jurisdiction. Jesus is saying that the power he uses to cast out demons is from God.
If he’s casting out demons by God’s action, then the kingdom of God has come among them. His actions are a sign that the kingdom is near and that he’s bringing it about. Jesus isn’t just a prophet or a miracle worker, but is the very embodiment of God’s kingdom on earth.
Jesus compares himself to a strong man who guards his house and tells us that he’s stronger than anyone who has come to overpower his authority. Saying, “Whoever isn’t with me is against me, and whoever doesn’t gather with me scatters.” This is a call to action for all those who witness his miracles and Jesus is saying that they must choose. They can’t be neutral or lukewarm. They must either be with him or against him.
As disciples, we must choose to be with the Lord and gather with him, or we will be scattering and working against him. So, then, let’s be with Jesus and work to bring God’s Kingdom to our earth.
