Today’s gospel passage is meant to prepare the disciples for their commencement. It is part of
the long section called “The Final Discourse,” the last time Jesus will address his followers.
Soon the disciples will graduate and go on to the work for which they have been preparing: to
heal the sick, to forgive sins, and to proclaim the Word. Jesus had prepared them well. And he knows that, as they go on their way, some people will receive them warmly while others will reject them outright. He wants to be sure that they will not lose their way or their vision.
At this time Jesus had suffered from the spread of misinformation about him, a distortion of his ministry, which offended the religious authorities and threatened the political rulers. He calls on his disciples to testify to the truth of his mission so that the world may know the goodness of God. To testify means to bear witness or to offer a solemn affirmation of what we believe to be true.
This call to testify goes out to his present day disciples, those of us who have been with Jesus
Christ from the time of our baptism. The Holy Spirit – the Advocate – inspires us to speak the
truth about the God in whom we believe – the One who promises everlasting life.
