Can you image what it would be like to be inside out? Would we look the same in others eyes? What would people think of us?
This is what Jesus is talking about today. The Pharisees appeared to be holy and righteous on the outside but on the inside, they were not so perfect. They presented themselves as clean on the outside, but Jesus was more concerned about them having clean hearts.
The Pharisees always seemed to get themselves in trouble when they would dine with Jesus. They were quick to tell Jesus what he or his followers were doing wrong in the ritual sense but slow to recognize what they themselves were doing wrong.
By comparing them to the cup and dish, he was letting them know that giving the appearance of being clean on the outside is not what matters to God. The father knows each of us. He knows our hearts and it is our hearts that Jesus is concerned about. Do we have loving, caring, giving hearts or do we have cold hearts that show no concern for those around us who are suffering? Do we do for others out of empathy or out of how good we will look?
Imagine yourself inside out. Would you be happy with what others would truly see? Are you happy with what Jesus does see?
